You've undoubtedly crossed a bridge at least once in your life, but you might not have thought much about its purpose at the time. A bridge is a functional way to close the gap between one point and another. A dental bridge serves much the same purpose in your mouth: it literally "bridges" the gap created by one or more missing teeth.

Dental bridges are used to prevent missing teeth from causing surrounding teeth to shift, changing your bite, or make your jaw sore. Shifting teeth also create new places for dental plaque to hide, increasing your chances of needing a tooth filling or gum disease treatment.

Dental bridges serve an aesthetic purpose too. They allow you to show off your beautiful smile without shame or fear that your missing tooth is what people will remember. At the same time, dental bridges cost less than other methods of tooth replacement, making them a great option for you.

FAQ Questions

What is a dental bridge?

Dental bridges replace missing teeth. They can restore chewing function, enhance your appearance and improve your oral health. A dental bridge consists of crowns (that fit over your natural teeth on either side of the space) and artificial teeth (that “bridge the gap” in your smile).

How soon can you eat after a bridge?

Do not chew hard foods on the restorations for 24 hour from the time they were cemented. The cement must be mature for about 24 hours to have optimum strength.

How long does a dental bridge last?

On average, the lifespan of a dental bridge is five to 15 years. Some can last even longer with proper care and maintenance. You may hear dentists call these “permanent bridges.”

How do you clean under a tooth bridge?

Regular dental floss is incapable of reaching between or under the bridge - so it's recommended to use either super floss, a floss threader, an interdental brush, or even a water pick to gently remove food debris and bacteria from under your dental bridge.
